Brief History
The first Polish immigrants came to Taunton in the 1890's. Those settling in the north end of the city worked at the mill; those settling
in the south end of Taunton found employment in the stove factories. For several years, the Polish people attended neighborhood Catholic
Churches, but they experienced difficulties since they did not understand the language of their adopted country.
The first priest
who understood their mother tongue and attended to their spiritual needs was Reverend John Chmielewski of South Boston. In 1907, Bishop
Stang assigned Reverend Hugo Dylla as the first pastor of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church. As there was no church, services were
held at St. Anthony's Church on School Street.
On October 1, 1908 the erection of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church was begun,
and on November 25, 1909 the first services were held in the church. In 1923, Bishop Feehan entrusted the pastoral care of the parish
to the care of the Franciscan Friars - Order of Friars Minor Conventual who staff the parish to the present.
